WINDHOEK, 12 JUL – The City of Windhoek on Tuesday announced municipal bus fare hikes of 7 and 8 per cent respectively, effective from 09 July this year.
The smart card fare per trip has increased from N.dollars 6 to N.dollars 6.50, whereas the cash fare per trip increased to N.dollars 7.50 from the previous N.dollars 7 paid by passengers.
A commuter on Tuesday told Nampa they were not happy with the new fees as the fares were already increased by N.dollar 1 last year.
City of Windhoek External Communications Officer, Lydia Amutenya via email to Nampa on Wednesday confirmed the 2017 fare increase, but said this was below the market rate.
“The bus fare was increased by N.dollar 1, however, this is still below market rate. Hence, council decided to adjust minimally annually in order to meet cost recovery objectives in this regard,” she said.
The announcement published in the New Era newspaper further alerts passengers to obtain receipts from bus drivers when they enter the bus in exchange for their payments.
“Passengers not in position of a receipt will be regarded as an illegal passenger and will be demanded by the bus inspector or city police officer to make a payment or depart the bus,” the announcement read.
In cases where drivers refuse to provide the commuter with a receipt, he/she should report to the inspector or City Police officer at the nearest checkpoint.
