WINDHOEK, 4 JUNE – As from 30 May 2018, MTC availed the 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) broadband services for its prepaid subscribers as from 30 May 2018.
MTC prepaid customers will now be able to enjoy data services at significantly higher speeds and quality, by accessing MTC’s 4G/LTE network service, which until recently was only available to postpaid customers.
All customers accessing MTC’s network with a 4G SIM card and a 4G/LTE enabled device will automatically be provisioned for the service.
“We stand to always provide access to a high quality and technologically advanced network. Data usage has significantly increased over the years, highlighting the demand for 4G
broadband accessibility for all our customers.
“Accessing the internet and other applications through the 4G /LTE network provides an improved experience in terms of faster downloads, uploads, and better quality in terms of high definition video content,” said MTC’s Chief Human Capital and Corporate Affairs Officer Tim Ekandjo during the launch in Windhoek.
He added that MTC’s commitment to transform the telecommunications landscape and experience in Namibia and
their focus on innovation to continue providing quality and affordable telecommunications services to all MTC’s customers.
There has been a considerable observation of rapid increase in data usage owing to the growth of faster networks and the availability of high-performance smartphones.
Generally, a 3G device uses lot more data than a 2G device. Similarly, when upgrade from a 3G to a 4G device and network,
on average, the data usage increases by at least three times.
This is so because, normally, 4G connectivity allows users to access the quality of videos and other contents in high-definition, and sizes of files are usually increased, which consumes more data.
On average, watching a 10-minute HD YouTube video can use up to 150MB of a data bundle.
An older 3G phone on the 3G network would have selected an SD (standard definition) YouTube video, but a modern 4G smartphone on the 4G network will auto-select the HD version of the same video, thereby consuming more data.
Users can control their data consumption by switching their smartphones from 4G to the 3G only network. – NDN Staffer
