MAPUTO, Sept. 25 — Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Friday called for continued efforts to strengthen the capacity of the country’s armed forces, as troops continue operations against terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the 62nd anniversary of the Mozambique Defense Armed Forces, Chapo said the military had made progress in improving security and stability in the Northern Operational Theater, where troops continue operations against terrorists in Cabo Delgado Province.
“Despite the successes that have been achieved in different battlefields, we recognize that there are still structural challenges and needs within the armed forces,” Chapo said, citing equipment, logistics, military infrastructure, sustainability and professionalization among the key issues.
He said the government would work to address these challenges through greater coordination and joint efforts. The president, who is also commander-in-chief of the country’s defense and security forces, paid tribute to troops deployed across the country, particularly those serving in Cabo Delgado.
Chapo also stressed the need to strengthen operational planning and improve protection for military personnel. He said that the armed forces also play an important role in assisting communities affected by natural disasters and protecting national sovereignty, territorial integrity and key infrastructure.
Chapo added that peace remained essential for the country’s development and called on the armed forces to continue safeguarding Mozambique’s national interests. (Xinhua)
