WINDHOEK, FEB 13 –The Ministry of Water, Agriculture and Forestry (MWAF) earlier today announced the first outbreak of a highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N8).
On February 2 2019, the disease was detected in penguins on Halifax Island near Luderitz in the Karas region, according to a statement from the ministry, and more than 200 penguins have been reported dead out of an estimated population of about 7,000.
The ministry indicated that no other birds on the island are seemingly affected by the disease at the moment, adding that the affected birds had been burnt and buried on the island.
While all birds are generally susceptible to infection, some species are resistant to infection.
While H5N8 is considered one of the less pathogenic subtype of the bird flu virus for humans, the ministry cautioned the public that other strains such as the H5N1 and H7N9 may be transmitted to people. – NDN Staffer
