WINDHOEK, 26 OCT – The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) on Thursday launched a report on the national study of prevalence and interventions for suicide in the capital.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary (PS) in the MoHSS, Ben Nangombe said the study was conducted in all fourteen regions of the country and focused on several factors such as the prevalence of suicides and suicidal attempts.
The PS added that the study also included factors like knowledge of suicide prevention, treatment efforts and attitudes towards suicide in the communities.
Nangombe further stated that the results of this study will be used to form the development of a five-year national strategic plan on the prevention of suicide in Namibia and to help to develop the policy framework to guide suicide prevention, treatment, management and coordination.
The PS further added that the MoHSS is currently implementing the preventative and treatment mechanism together with other role players, such as Ministries of Safety and Security, Education, Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Debmarine Namibia, Bel Esprit hospital and Lifeline/Childline Namibia.
Speaking at the same occasion of the report World Health Organization representative, Dr Charles Sagoe-Moses, said the link between suicide and mental health is established as depression, psychosis and substance abuse are contributing factors to suicide.
Sagoe-Moses said assessment and counselling is therefore paramount for survivors of suicide attempts and that with counselling, social support, time and medical interventions, many of those who have attempted suicide will go on to live full and productive lives.
