WINDHOEK, 19 APR – The Ministry of Environment and Tourism on Thursday signed an agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) towards climate change mitigation valued at over N.dollars 4 million.
The funds are intended to enforce the preparation and submission of Namibia’s third Biennial Update Report this year.
Speaking at the signing ceremony here on Thursday, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Malan Lindeque, said the project titled ‘Enabling Activities of Namibia’ is in accordance with established Global Environmental Facility procedures and is funded by the Global Environmental Facility through UNDP.
Lindeque emphasised that the report focuses on greenhouse emissions and mitigation actions, of which Namibia is expected to give an update every second year as a Paris Agreement signatory.
“The project will kick start activities for Namibia to prepare on building and updating what we have so far reported in our previous [report] years,” he said.
Lindeque noted that Namibia submitted its first report in 2014 and its second in 2016, making it one of the few countries to have so far fully complied with the reporting obligations.
At the same occasion, UNDP Resident Representative, Kiki Gbeho said the signing marks a milestone in Namibia’s effort to address climate change.
“This is in line with the national priorities as set out in the fifth National Development Plan and the UNDP is proud to be associated with the effort in mitigating climate change,” she said.
