LOS ANGELES, Apr 26 -- Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced a proposal Thursday to build an aerial tram that would take passengers from the city's Union Station to Dodger Stadium to ease traffic and parking problems. Garcetti proposed the idea at a Metropolitan Transportation Authority meeting, followed by a video clip released by his office afterwards showing how the system works. According to the video, the gondola is capable of transiting more than 5,000 visitors per hour to the stadium, which is always crowded by tens of thousands of fans who appear every match day. "I am absolutely confident that this will happen. It's not actually crazy," Garcetti tweeted. According to local CBS news channel, the plan was initially proposed by Aerial Rapid Transit Technologies LLC boss Drew McCourt, son of former owner of the baseball team Dodgers, Frank McCourt, who sold the baseball team in 2011 but still owns half of the 130-acre (52.6-hectare) parking lot around the stadium. The tram project's cost, estimated at 125 million U.S. dollars, will be funded partly by McCourt Jr's investment firm, which would seek private financing for the remainder. The company expected the tram to be in operation in 2022 if it is approved this year. It was not the first time that the mayor touted the gondola as a potential solution to traffic congestion.
