RUNDU, 04 AUG – A youth group called Kavango Youth Empowerment has invited the public to a candle-lighting ceremony on Saturday in honour of the fallen heroes and heroines of the liberation struggle.
The group’s secretary, Annakleta Haikera told Nampa on Friday the memorial service in Rundu will be held to bestow respect on the fallen leaders who have contributed to Namibia’s independence.
The group invited the youth from the Kavango East and Kavango West regions and the public at large to attend the memorial. It will entail a walk at 17h00 from the Engen Service Station to the Kavango East Regional Council auditorium, where the remembrance will take place.
“We just want to honour our leaders that brought freedom to us and the independence we are enjoying today, because it was not easy for us to get independence and these people fought for our freedom,” Haikera said.
She added that through the ceremony, they also want to try to make the youth ponder working hard so they can leave a legacy that people will remember them for.
Haikera said the service will further serve as educational for some of the youth born after independence who do not know some of the country’s heroes and heroines, as their life stories will be told.
The youth group was formed during a dark period for Rundu last month, after a family of five people was massacred by a family member in the Ndama informal settlement.
