WINDHOEK, 13 OCT – The dwelling place of Chief Hosea Katjikururume Kutako at Toasis village in the Aminius Constituency has been declared a National Heritage Site.
This was announced by Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Engelbrecht Nawatiseb on Thursday.
This, according to Nawatiseb, forms part of the Cabinet decisions taken on Tuesday.
Toasis is located about two kilometres south of Aminius.
It was further directed that Kutako’s dwelling place be renovated and a shrine, in remembrance of his heroic role toward the Namibian struggle, be erected.
Cabinet further directed that the engraving in front of the genocide monument at the old ‘Alte Feste’ building be amended to recognise the Ovaherero and Nama genocide of 1904-1908, while the key graves at the Okahandja cemetery are to be upgraded to National Monuments and the cemetery renovated.
“A task team should be set up to identify a few historic shrines from communities countrywide who were dispossessed, for construction of memorial sites,” said Nawatiseb.
The display of the Namibian liberation struggle in the Independence Museum will be revisited to duly and accurately reflect all communities and groups that participated in the liberation struggle in line with the principle of inclusivity, the deputy minister added.
