Jordan reaffirms two-state solution as only path to Israeli-Palestinian peace after Trump announces peace plan

   AMMAN, Jan. 28  -- Jordan on Tuesday reaffirmed the two-state solution as the only path to a lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis, after U.S. President Donald Trump announced his Middle East peace plan earlier in the day.
   The national interests of Jordan and its established and unwavering positions and principles toward the Palestinian issue governs the way the government deals with all proposals and initiatives aimed at resolving the conflict, said Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi in a ministry statement obtained by Xinhua.
   The minister also warned against unilateral Israeli measures such as annexing Palestinian lands, building and expanding illegal settlements on Palestinian lands and encroaching on the holy sites in Jerusalem.
   "Jordan supports every genuine effort aimed at achieving just and comprehensive peace, while highlighting the urgency of launching serious and direct negotiations that solve all final-status issues in accordance with established terms of reference, the Arab peace initiative and international law," he said.
   Jordan seeks "a true, just peace on the basis of the two-state solution that ends the occupation that began in 1967, preserves the rights of the Palestinian people, guarantees the security of all sides, and protects the interests of Jordan," Safadi added.
   Jordan, which signed a peace deal with Israel in 1994, has repeatedly rejected any move that undermines the chances of creating an independent Palestinian state.  Xinhua
