WINDHOEK, 13 APR – Amateur boxer Jonas Junias Jonas on Friday qualified for the men’s boxing final at the 2018 Commonwealth Games after beating his opponent Luke McCormack of England in the semi-finals.
The Commonwealth Games are underway in Queensland, Australia.
The 64 kilogramme (kg) boxer beat McCormack on points after three rounds of boxing. He won the fight 3-2 after three of the five judges scored in his favour.
To reach the final, the Namibian amateur boxer beat Rashield Williams of Bahamas in the Round of 32, Valentin Kondakov of Samoa in the Round of 16 and Dinindu Ponnawela Vidanalage Don of Sri Lanka in the quarter-finals.
The 2014 Commonwealth Games silver medallist will now face Thomas Blumenfeld of Canada on Saturday.
Other Namibians also expected to compete on Saturday are the road racing cyclists.
Vera Adrian is the only female cyclist representing Namibia in the road race, while Drikus Coetzee, Dan Craven, Martin Freyer and Tristan de Lange are the male cyclists representing Namibia in the individual road race.
Michelle Vorster was the only woman to represent the country in the mountain bike event. She finished eighth in that event on Thursday.
The Namibian team is competing in athletics, bowls, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, Para-sports and triathlon at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, ending on 15 April.
