TEHRAN, Sept.10 – Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, condemned US and Israeli efforts to pressure the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and pave the way for referring Iran’s nuclear file to the UN Security Council.
Referring to a draft resolution based on a report by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, Baqaei said Western countries repeatedly turn to the IAEA when they fail to advance their objectives.
He also described the latest move as legally contradictory, arguing that Western claims about the revival of previous UN Security Council resolutions through the “snapback” mechanism are inconsistent with their current actions, thereby reinforcing the position of Iran, China and Russia that the mechanism is inapplicable.
Baqaei further blamed the US and Israel for the current situation, including the IAEA’s limited access to Iran’s nuclear facilities, saying they had blocked the path to cooperation and were now turning to the Agency.
He described the latest efforts as driven by “ill will” and aimed at further escalating tensions, warning that Iran would take the necessary measures in response to any action. He concluded by stressing that repeating an approach that had already failed would be a mistake.(Namibia Daily News / Tasnim)
