MADRID, Oct. 21 — Around 300 people attempted to storm the frontier fence that separated Morocco from the Spanish enclave of Melilla on Sunday morning, causing one death and 19 injuries.
The Spanish Government Delegate in Melilla confirmed that a man was killed at around 9 a.m., when the group attempted to scale the double six-meter razor wire in broad daylight.
Six Spanish policemen also suffered minor injuries in the incident which saw 200 immigrants scale the wire before making their way to the enclave’s Temporary Immigrant Internment Center (CETI).
The Government Delegate informed that the body of the immigrant had been discovered on the Spanish side of the border.
The Delegate said the authorities would carry out an autopsy on the body, but early indications show the cause of death was cardio-respiratory failure.
Sunday’s assault on the border is the second largest attempt to break into Melilla in 2018 after a similar incident on Jan. 6, when 209 were successful.
Figures published by the Spanish Interior Ministry earlier this week confirm that 48,669 migrants reached Spanish territory this year by Oct. 15.
Although the majority of these migrants made the dangerous sea crossing to the Spanish mainland, the Balearic or Canary Islands, over 5,000 crossed the borders into Melilla and Ceuta, both of which are Spain’s north-African enclaves. – XINHUA
