Swakopmund, Aug. 5 — Residents and visitors to the coastal town of Swakopmund witnessed a historical moment on Thursday evening when 10 ancient buildings were lit to the sounds of music, marking the town’s 130-anniversary celebrations.
Swakopmund has a rich architectural style with a heavy German influence which can be seen through the town’s old building structures.
The music and lights provided a form of night-time entertainment across the 10 ancient structures to give a historic significance and light up memories.
Special lighting effects were projected onto the buildings from colonial times and synchronized with live narration and music to dramatise the history of the places/buildings.
Buildings included The Hohenzollern Hausse … one of the finest colonial and first version built in 1903, with an estimated height of 28 metres; The single-storey Prinzessin Rupprecht Heim constructed in 1902; Alte Kaserne built in 1905 in typical German style and Bezirks / Amtsgericht built in 1906.
The other structures are the Otavi Bahn (opposite Shoprite); Summer Residence of the President (behind the Amphitheatre), the delightful Railway Station (Swakopmund Hotel & Entertainment Centre), and Lutheran Church in Mondesa, Baptism church in Vineta, and the Roman Catholic Church in Tamariskia.
