WINDHOEK, 26 NOV – The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung in collaboration with Regain Trust and the European Union will this week host a public dialogue aimed at creating awareness against human trafficking.
The event, which will be hosted here on Wednesday, is intended to create a platform for stakeholders to convene discussions which could lead to an accelerated implementation of the newly-enacted Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act No. 1 of 2018.
A media statement issued on Monday by the foundation said the event will bring together experts, practitioners, academia, diplomats, civil society organisations, media, students and the public, in order to improve and strengthen current legislation, approaches and strategies to address trafficking in persons in Namibia.
The public dialogue forms part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence (GBV), and will be convened under the theme: ‘Human Trafficking – How safe are our women and children?’
According to the statement, it is estimated that globally 2.5 million people fall victim to human trafficking annually.
“The numbers of reported victims in Namibia have steadily increased; just in recent months the Namibian nation was shocked by the horrific incident in which a girl child was murdered in what was believed to be a case of human trafficking,” the statement noted, referring to the late Avihe Ujaha.
It added that a number of reported kidnapping attempts of minors were also reported in various parts of the country.
The organisation further said that the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare recorded eight victims of human trafficking this year, compared to seven in 2015 in Namibia.
“It is believed that many more cases of human trafficking go unreported, which suggests that the issue in Namibia may be more severe than what our current statistics reveal,” noted the statement.
The annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence invites citizens to challenge violence against women and girls through deeds of activism.
It starts on 25 November – the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women – and runs for 16 days until Human Rights Day on 10 December. – NAMPA
