COPENHAGEN, May 6 -- If Denmark can maintain its current COVID-19 infection rate, the first wave of the epidemic is predicted to fade away on its own, the Danish Statens Serum Institut (SSI) said in a new report on Wednesday. The latest figures released by the SSI, the governmental public health and research institution, show that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Denmark stands at 9,938, with a death toll of 506. "It can be concluded that the epidemic is likely to die out of itself if the current level of closure continues," states the report, which also describes the evolution of the epidemic, sums up the current measures and outlines a number of reopening scenarios. Eleven different scenarios for the second phase of reopening have been created based on a "foundation block" of measures that include the reopening of retail shops (including major shopping centers), professional sports competitions without spectators, libraries (deposits and loans only), zoos, botanical gardens and critical public workplaces, such as the Armed Forces and the Danish Working Environment Authority. The "foundation block" is combined with various other measures, such as the reopening of cafes and restaurants with outdoor seating and the reopening of after-school activities. Having tested the various scenarios, the SSI estimated that "The epidemic is expected to die out if reopening scenarios correspond to the basic block alone, provided that physical distance and hygiene measures are maintained." The report, commissioned by the government to calculate the risk of the further spread of the infection and the available hospital capacity, will also provide the basis for political negotiations on the second phase of re-openings in Denmark scheduled for Wednesday evening.
