Windhoek, August 25 – The Desert Ice Challenge T20 Cricket Tournament reached its thrilling climax on August 20th, as UNAM Zebras 1 emerged victorious against Run Whisperers Academy in a riveting showdown. Hosted in Namibia’s capital, Windhoek, the tournament featured six teams showcasing their prowess on the cricket field.
The participating teams – UNAM Zebras 1, UNAM Zebras 2, Run Whisperers Academy, Green Mambas, CCD Tigers, and Gobabis Krieket Academy – engaged in a series of matches across various venues. Known for its intense competition and enthralling cricketing moments, the tournament lived up to its reputation as each team pushed their limits to secure the coveted championship title.
The 2023 inaugural Desert Ice Challenge T20 received strong support from the local business community. Geared towards uniting players from premier and developmental cricket levels, the event was sponsored by prominent names such as Tap a Meal, Namibia’s renowned food delivery app, and Stock Market College. Additional support came from sponsors including Sherry Planners, Willie Junius Architectural Designs, YouTrack Fleet Management, and NamBatDoc as associate sponsors. These sponsors played a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth and professional execution of the tournament.
In a thrilling final, UNAM Zebras 1 faced off against Run Whisperers Academy. The latter scored 145 runs, a target that UNAM Zebras 1 set out to chase. The crowd was treated to a T20 cricket masterclass as the two teams battled it out. Ultimately, UNAM Zebras 1 triumphed by securing the target set by Run Whisperers Academy with 6 wickets to spare. Nyashadzaishe Nyasha emerged as the standout performer of the tournament, earning the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) for consistently delivering match-winning performances throughout the event.
Vernon Cloete, displaying remarkable batting prowess, was awarded the Best Batter of the tournament. His consistent run-scoring played a crucial role in UNAM Zebras 1’s triumphant journey. On the bowling front, Henre Opperman from Gobabis Academy stood out as the Best Bowler, outclassing opposing batting line-ups with his skilful and disciplined bowling techniques.
Adding an extra layer of excitement, U16 player Henre Opperman was recognized as the Impact Player of the Series. Opperman’s contributions extended beyond his bowling skills, as he played pivotal roles in crucial moments. Emphasizing the development of young cricketers and providing them with the opportunity to compete at a higher level, Opperman’s emergence signifies a significant achievement for the tournament’s organizers in pursuing their objectives.
