RUNDU, 18 MAY – Kavango East sports officer, Someno Erastus said he is happy with the region’s performance at the National Youth Games that took place in Windhoek last week.
Kavango East took third place, bettered only by Khomas Region in first place and Erongo in second.
Khomas won 66 medals of which 36 were gold; 18 silver and 12 bronze, while Erongo finished with 27 medals (10 gold, nine silver and eight bronze) and Kavango East won 22 medals (nine gold, seven silver and six bronze).
Speaking to Nampa on Wednesday, Erastus said he was happy with how far the team went and credited both the athletes and officials from the region for working-hard to ensure that the region gets a place on the podium.
He also applauded the office of the governor, which was the team’s main sponsor. He singled out the governor, Samuel Mbambo, who he said “was there from the start.”
Erastus said Mbambo was present at every activity and visited the teams at the various venues where they competed.
“I take my hat off for the governor for all the support and encouragement that he gave to the athletes,” he said.
The governor’s office also paid for three 23-seater buses and the transportation of athletes to the Youth Games.
Over 1 800 athletes took part in the games in football, athletics, basketball, boxing, judo, netball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.
The Youth Games were used to select national teams that will represent Namibia at the 2018 Region Five Games in Botswana in December this year.
