Katima Mulilo, July 7 – A groundbreaking proposal put forward by Elifas Dingara, a member of Parliament from the Swapo party, is rapidly gaining support not only from fellow lawmakers but also from the general public. Dingara’s motion calls for a one million dollar allocation to be granted to each Namibian citizen, aiming to tackle poverty and promote equitable distribution of national resources. The nation is buzzing with discussions surrounding this progressive initiative.
Dingara’s argument is based on the belief that Namibia, a country blessed with vast natural resources, is far from being poor. He asserts that the nation can afford a one-time payment of one million dollars to every citizen, a move that would significantly alleviate poverty for all.
Members of the public interviewed by NDN expressed their overwhelming support for the proposal, considering it long overdue. Bester Likemo told NDN that if the government were to allocate one million dollars to each citizen, it would invigorate the economy, which has been stagnant due to the lingering effects of COVID-19, and restore normalcy to people’s lives.
“It’s a commendable idea. Namibia is rich in fish, diamonds, gold, and recently discovered oil. If there is political will, implementing this should not be difficult,” added Matongo.
Another member of the public, identified only as Alex, applauded Dingara’s motion, stating that if all members of Parliament had similar plans, Namibia would become a much better place. Alex envisioned the positive impact of waking up with a million dollars in one’s bank account, freeing citizens from burdensome loans and financial hardships. Alex emphasized the significance of the proposal coming from a ruling party MP, demonstrating the party’s commitment to the welfare of the people. Alex urged everyone to support the motion, highlighting that if it had been presented by the opposition, it might have faced a different reception.
On Wednesday, July 5, 2023, the national assembly session was adjourned by the speaker following a spirited debate sparked by the one-million-dollar motion. All eyes are now on the national assembly, eagerly awaiting their decision on whether to endorse or reject this groundbreaking proposal. – Namibia Daily News
