ADEN, Yemen, Oct. 12 — A deadly Houthi attack on Riyadh’s main international airport has heightened the risk of regional escalation, putting pressure on Saudi Arabia to respond and raising the prospect of deeper involvement by outside powers.
Saturday’s attack on a passenger terminal at King Khalid International Airport killed 12 people and injured 309 others, according to Saudi authorities. The Saudi-led coalition vowed a firm response, while U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington “may” join Saudi Arabia in striking the Houthis.
As the confrontation widens, analysts interviewed by Xinhua said the airport attacks are intended to shift the costs of war from Yemen’s battlefields onto Saudi Arabia itself. Yet, they warned that a strategy designed to strengthen Houthi leverage could instead harden Riyadh’s position, encourage deeper regional involvement and make the escalating conflict increasingly difficult to contain.
PRESSURE BEYOND BATTLEFIELD
“Targeting Riyadh’s airport is about more than military damage. It’s about undermining confidence, disrupting economic activity, and pressuring Riyadh to reconsider its involvement,” Hisham Al-Omeisy, conflict analyst and senior Yemen advisor with the European Institute of Peace, told Xinhua.
He described the approach as “asymmetric warfare”: unable to compete conventionally with Saudi Arabia, the Houthis can move pressure beyond Yemen’s frontlines and threaten sensitive infrastructure deep inside the kingdom.
Jarrah Mutlaq Al-Qazaa, media adviser at the Kuwait Journalists Association, likewise viewed the airport attacks as part of a broader effort by the Houthis to shift the costs of the conflict onto Saudi Arabia, while emphasizing the wider implications of targeting such a prominent civilian facility.
“The objective goes beyond military retaliation,” Al-Qazaa told Xinhua. “It is about raising the costs for Saudi Arabia in terms of national security, economic activity and international image.”
He perceived an international airport as not merely a transport hub, but also a symbol of a country’s connectivity, security and international standing. The repercussions of an attack, he said, could therefore extend beyond physical damage to flight disruptions, higher aviation insurance costs and broader perceptions of security in the kingdom.
Abdul-Ghani Al-Iryani, a senior researcher at the Sana’a Center for Strategic Studies, told Xinhua that the pressure also serves a broader political objective. He said the Houthis are “seeking to pressure Saudi Arabia to return to a previously negotiated road map” that he described as favorable to the group at the expense of Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
Yet, the analysts warned that the same strategy intended to build Houthi leverage could backfire after Saturday’s civilian casualties. Al-Qazaa said that mounting civilian casualties could narrow rather than expand Riyadh’s room for compromise.
“The higher the civilian toll, the more difficult it becomes for Saudi Arabia to make concessions amid domestic and international political pressure,” he said.
Echoing those concerns, Yemeni political analyst Khalil Muthanna al-Omari told Xinhua that attacks on airports “raise the stakes considerably,” potentially inviting stronger Saudi retaliation and broader international coordination against the group.
“With each escalation, the room for stepping back becomes narrower,” al-Omari said.
DEFENSE CHALLENGE
The strikes have simultaneously exposed a second dimension of the confrontation: the difficulty of completely shielding Saudi Arabia’s vast territory from increasingly diverse Houthi missile and drone threats, analysts said.
Ali Bin Hadi, an Aden-based military observer, told Xinhua that “repeated penetrations suggest potential gaps” in the defensive shield, arguing that “years of warfare have given the Houthis time to study Saudi defenses and adapt their methods.”
Saudi Arabia’s geography compounds the challenge, Bin Hadi said, with airports, cities and oil installations dispersed across a vast area while drones and low-flying cruise missiles can stretch expensive defensive systems.
The mounting pressure on Saudi defenses has also brought the potential roles of Pakistan and Türkiye, Saudi Arabia’s security partners under the Mecca Agreement, into sharper focus, raising questions over how far they could become involved should the confrontation widen, according to analysts.
Al-Iryani said the precise scope of commitments under the Mecca Agreement remains unclear, and Bin Hadi cautioned that stronger defenses alone would not resolve the underlying conflict.
The same uncertainty surrounds Washington. Trump’s suggestion that the United States could join Saudi strikes has raised the possibility of direct U.S. involvement, but the analysts differed over how readily Washington might cross that threshold.
Bin Hadi sees “little appetite in Washington for another confrontation with the Houthis” after previously seeking to disengage from that front. “Washington may help contain the fire, but it is unlikely to step into it,” he said.
Al-Qazaa, however, said continued escalation could alter that calculation. He said the likelihood of direct U.S. military involvement would depend largely on whether Houthi attacks continue to cause heavy casualties, the extent to which Riyadh seeks U.S. participation, and whether Washington sees scope for limited strikes capable of restoring deterrence without drawing it into a prolonged war.
ROAD TO TALKS
Despite the intensifying confrontation, analysts broadly agreed that the path to diplomacy remains open, though they differed over what a viable political settlement would need to achieve.
Bin Hadi said Saudi Arabia “now faces a difficult choice” between a broader military confrontation with potentially heavy costs and renewed efforts at de-escalation, while years of aerial warfare have made the Houthis increasingly resilient to airstrikes.
“A prolonged state of neither full war nor genuine truce will continue to exhaust all sides,” he said. “That equation is unlikely to remain sustainable.”
Al-Omeisy went further, arguing that even a successful Saudi-Houthi accommodation would address only “one layer of the crisis.” He said a viable settlement requires credible security guarantees, a more unified Yemeni government, and a political process that addresses the fundamental question of state authority.
“This is a Yemeni conflict, not simply a Saudi-Houthi dispute,” Al-Omeisy said. “Ending Saudi-Houthi hostilities without addressing Yemen’s underlying conflict would merely postpone the next war.”
The Riyadh attack has therefore sharpened two intertwined questions: whether escalating pressure can produce deterrence without triggering a wider confrontation, and whether any eventual de-escalation can move beyond a Saudi-Houthi understanding toward resolving Yemen’s underlying conflict.
As attacks increasingly cross national borders while fighting intensifies inside Yemen, the answers may determine not only the trajectory of the renewed war, but also how far its consequences spread across the Gulf and the wider region. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)
