WINDHOEK, 08 JUL – Cultural tourism in Namibia has a lot of potential but is underdeveloped, Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta has said.
Speaking at the launch of Endjala Lodge and Traditional House at Okapya village in the Oshana Region on Saturday, Shifeta said there is a lack of publicly available information about some of the tourist regions in Namibia and cultural tourism is not promoted sufficiently.
“Although Namibia has rich, unique and diverse cultures, traditional tourism is often ignored,” he said.
He noted that it is important for regions to capitalise on the comparative and competitive advantages of being able to offer tourists a vibrant mixture of historical and contemporary cultural resources in a rural setting.
The minister further said there is a need to explore what type of cultural products and infrastructure can be created around national and cultural heritage in the regions.
“With a traditional homestead as tourist attraction we not only teach tourists about our culture, but also our children about traditional practices that are long forgotten,” Shifeta said.
The owner of the lodge, John Endjala said tourists do not visit northern Namibia because of a lack of traditional tourist attractions.
“We have thrown away our culture and the only culture we have now is building shebeens everywhere, which tourists will not find attractive. Our rural areas are left out of the tourism industry,” he said.
