Chinese NGO donates backpacks, stationery to Eluwa Special School

ONGWEDIVA, 29 OCT – China’s Ambassador to Namibia, Zhang Yiming handed over 360 backpacks and stationery to learners at the Eluwa Special School in Ongwediva on Friday.
“Only education can make a nation powerful and strong,” Zhang said while handing over the donation from Chinese non-governmental organisation, China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation.
Since the beginning of this year, the ambassador said, he has visited eight regions in Namibia and awarded Chinese Ambassador Scholarships to more than 400 outstanding students.
“This year, we also offered Chinese government scholarships to nearly 40 Namibian students to assist them in accomplishing their dream of studying in China, and provided training opportunities to nearly 300 people from all walks of life,” he said.
Zhang urged the Eluwa learners to study hard and always work on improving themselves, saying he hopes to see them qualify for scholarships from the Chinese government and become leaders in various areas in Namibia in future.
Some 13 Namibian schools with 10 000 learners have been selected as beneficiaries of the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation.
Zhang also handed over N$20 000 donated by the Chinese business community in northern Namibia to be used to repair the school’s broken windows.
Acting principal of Eluwa, Ndinelago Nangolo commended the people of China for giving the school a helping hand.
Eluwa is a special school for visually and hearing impaired children established in 1973. It currently has 358 learners from pre-primary to Grade 10, 46 teachers and 50 non-teaching staff members.
