REHOBOTH, SEPT. 13 – A 20-year-old man arrested on Saturday for the alleged rape of a 53-year-old woman made a brief second appearance in the Rehoboth Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Borris Smith appeared before Magistrate Andre Matulich, after which his case was postponed until 03 October for him to acquire legal aid.
It was initially suspected that Smith and a younger woman conspired to lure the victim into a riverbed in Rehoboth’s Block G, where Smith is alleged to have raped her.
However, the young woman was released before the court proceedings for lack of evidence and Nampa understands that she will now turn State witness.
It is alleged that the two women had been socialising together at a local bar and when their drinks were finished, the victim was invited by the young woman to accompany her to her residence to get more money.
According to police reports, while passing through the riverbed, the victim was grabbed from behind by Smith, who allegedly assaulted and raped her in full view of the younger woman.
The victim was rescued by passers-by after the male suspect and younger woman fled the scene, but they were later arrested.
Smith was denied bail as investigations are at an early stage. He is being held at the Rehoboth Police holding cells.
