Around 50 000 people estimated to clean up Kavango East

RUNDU, 17 MAY  – The Kavango East Regional Council (KERC) is estimating that close to 50 000 people will take part in the clean-up campaign in the region scheduled to take place countrywide, next week.
President Hage Geingob commanded a national mass clean-up campaign earlier this year and announced the date, which is 25 May 2018, during his State of the Nation Address last month.
Chief Regional Officer (CRO), Ludwig Thikusho explained here on Thursday that the KERC came up with this estimate as a lot of schools will be taking part, thus increasing the number of people who will participate.
He said the region has thus far: “Secured 24 pick-up vehicles that will cater for all six constituencies and the steering committee still has to sit to decide how many vehicles will be allocated per constituency.”
Thikusho added that the region has 660 cleaning equipment ranging from rakes, forks, pangas, axes, hoes and wheelbarrows.
The clean-up campaign for the region already commenced in Rundu on 17 April 2018 and was spearheaded by the Rundu Town Council, he noted.
This was followed by the Divundu Village Council, which started with its campaign on Thursday, with Thikusho saying it is better to start cleaning earlier as the litter will be too much, come 25 May.
The Sauyemwa settlement in Rundu is busy with a clean-up which also started on Thursday, he further informed this agency.
All refuse collected will be dumped at the Rundu dumping site.
Thikusho, however, said the regional council up to now does not know how much money it will spend on the entire clean-up campaign as it is awaiting on government to also meet it halfway.
The Kavango East Region has a population of around 136 000.
