SWAKOPMUND, 19 April – As far as visitors are concerned, Swakopmund is one of the neatest towns in the coastal area. However, with the Easter holiday, the town received so many visitors who came to enjoy an escape from all the busyness of the city or their crazy little worlds. Three to four days ago, one could not even throw a limb in the air, the beaches were filled with gatherings of people, including children, from different parts of the country, or the world, leaving the town in a bit of a mess.
Just a week ago the beach was cleaned of all the filth, leaving it looking like a tourist paradise. But as the Easter weekend narrowed to an end, its sandy shores are once again filled with trash. Although around 10% of it probably comes from stormwater undulation, more waste is left by beach visitors, given the fact that there was a market exhibition that took place alongside the beach over the weekend.
Although I expected the visitors to leave the beaches in a much more intolerable state, it’s not really as bad as some would have feared.
However, residents suggest that visitors need to make sure that the place is left clean for the other tourists to enjoy. And we should discipline ourselves or rather say adapt to the habit of not putting garbage where it doesn’t belong to maintain a healthy, immaculate environment. – Namibia Daily News
