WINDHOEK, 18 MAY – The death of Sakeus ‘Kablou’ Amateta could have been avoided if he had cooperated with the police, the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) said in a statement issued Thursday.
Amateta died Sunday after being shot by a member of NamPol’s Windhoek special operation team at a bar in Wanaheda while he allegedly attempted to stab a police officer.
The statement said the police are aware of various messages of revenge by unknown persons circulating on social media since.
The force discouraged the public from making assumptions and circulating threats which may cause fear and panic.
“The recent unfortunate incident where a young man lost his life could have been avoided had the now deceased cooperated with the police. The suspect in this specific incident was a wanted person and the police had all the legitimate reasons to make an arrest,” the statement said.
It stated that there were a number of cases against Amateta, including nine cases of armed robberies, two cases of attempted murder, one case of housebreaking, one case of assault of police officers, one of discharging a firearm in public and one of theft.
He was regarded as dangerous and armed.
The statement also said when the police execute an arrest, it does not mean the person is guilty and therefore the arrest is expected to be carried out in a peaceful manner, meaning cooperation and professionalism must be applied at all times.
“The public is reminded to allow the police to carry out their duties peacefully,” it said.
A case of murder has been opened against the police officer involved in the matter and witnesses are requested to submit statements at the Wanaheda Police Station.
