TOKYO, Nov. 5 — Tokyo stocks ended mixed Thursday, as investors sold technology shares and shifted funds into other sectors amid concerns over data center construction following Democrats’ victories in both chambers of the U.S. Congress in the midterm elections.
The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended down 1,110.73 points, or 1.79 percent, from Wednesday at 61,077.90.
The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 45.01 points, or 1.16 percent, higher at 3,940.39.
The Nikkei index was in positive territory in early trading but soon slipped into negative territory as artificial intelligence- and semiconductor-related shares came under selling pressure. Dealers attributed the sell-off to concerns that Democratic victories could lead to tighter restrictions on data center construction.
Despite the weakness in technology shares, a broad range of other stocks attracted buying interest amid relief after the outcome of the U.S. midterm elections became clear.(Namibia Daily News/Xinhua)
