Opuwo, Dec. 31 — The Kaoko-Otavi Prison Clinic was officially opened on Tuesday in the Opuwo Rural Constituency of the Kunene Region.
The opening ceremony, held on 30 December, was attended by senior government officials, including ministers and regional councillors. Kunene Governor Vipuakuje Muharukua welcomed all invited guests and highlighted the historical significance of the clinic’s location.
Governor Muharukua explained that the clinic was planned during the colonial era, a period when local leaders and community members opposed the construction of health facilities in areas previously developed by colonial authorities. As a result, the first clinic was built at Orumana instead of Kaoko-Otaavi.
The keynote address was delivered by the Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, Lucia Lipumbu, who said the government has plans to upgrade the clinic into a fully fledged hospital in the future. She added that this development will coincide with the expansion of the Kaoko-Otavi prison facility in the coming years.
Minister Lipumbu emphasized that the clinic will play a crucial role in improving access to healthcare services for inmates as well as surrounding communities.
