Karim Benzema scored the game’s first goal as Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 3-1 on a day when Robert Lewandowski fumbled his lines.
El Clasico may have lost some of its lustrs in the previous two seasons as a result of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s exits, but Sunday’s match between Real Madrid and Barcelona seemed to herald a revival of the rivalry.
Many believed that Barcelona was back on an equal footing with Madrid, the current European and Spanish champions, as a result of their summer of investment and their strong Liga season debut.
However, it appears that Xavi Hernandez’s team still has a ways to go after losing 3-1 at Santiago Bernabeu.
Prior to Ferran Torres’ late goal, Madrid had the upper hand thanks to goals from Karim Benzema and Fede Valverde in the first half. However, Rodrygo’s late penalty goal gave Carlo Ancelotti’s team the victory.
But who will want to swiftly forget a Clasico that they have to remember? GOAL deconstructs it.
