BERLIN, July 17 — The 2022-23 season is a journey into the unknown for clubs, footballers and coaches, Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus has said recently.
“No one has the experience of how to deal with a season interrupted by a World Cup such as the 2022 Qatar tournament,” the German international told Xinhua in an interview.
Having to face midweek games over months embedded by the usual weekend encounters requires a new approach for training and players’ efforts, the 33-year-old said while attending a pre-season training camp in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland.
“Like me, there are many players around able to count on a lot of experience, but the 2022 World Cup is an entirely new situation for all of us,” Reus added.
Reus spoke about workouts during his vacations “as time is running.”
The unknown situation might require strict action when it comes to recovery time and additional fitness in his perspective.
The 48-time-capped striker spoke about his desire to continue his career “as I still feel a lot of energy in my veins.”
Some more years of football are in his mind after his current contract expires in 2023.
Reus said his club is aware of the enthusiasm triggered by high-quality transfers.
The signing of the three German internationals such as Niklas Sule (Bayern), Nico Schlotterbeck (Freiburg), Karim Adeyemi (Salzburg), and Cote d’Ivoire international Sebastien Haller (Ajax) makes the club fans hope for a title this season.
The return of Dortmund-born and crowd pleaser Edin Terzic as head coach has increased expectations as fans consider the 39-year-old as the legitimate successor of Jurgen Klopp, the club’s most successful coach.
“We have high goals this season but more than ever the team needs to get together first,” Reus commented after the Black and Yellows restructured their squad with the Norwegian goal-machine Erling Haaland departing for Manchester City.
The Dortmund forward spoke about a challenge that “we are facing with confidence.”
Reus demanded patience as Terzic is for the first time in charge of having to create a competitive side for an entire season.
Not only fans hope for success but the team, he said. “This has to work in a tight time frame due to the World Cup,” the 2021 German Cup winner stated.
Reus said he is hoping the current team stays together for a longer time, which might increase the chances for new success. (Xinhua)
