WINDHOEK, April 26 — The Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) said cargo volume handled at two of its managed ports had increased during the financial year ended March 31, 2021, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
In a March bulletin issued on Tuesday, Namport said the TEUs (containerized boxes) handled at the ports of Walvis Bay and Luderitz, increased year on year by five percent on the back of increased transshipment volumes.
“The surge of transshipment volumes was due to the disruption in carrier networks resulting in vessels being re-routed to the Port of Walvis Bay,” Namport said.
Meanwhile, the company said the bulk and break-bulk volumes also increased by 14 percent in comparison to the previous financial year.
Namport said the commodities which recorded the largest increases are copper, charcoal, bagged salt, fish and fish products, petroleum, wheat, vehicles, sulfur, and manganese ore.
“Overall, we remain positive about the medium to long-term prospects of the business. We anticipate the growth trajectory to remain for a while, premised on focused marketing efforts, operational efficiency enhancement, and the containment of costs,” Namport said
