KEETMANSHOOP, 23 OCT – Construction of the first phase of the University of Namibia’s (UNAM) Southern Campus at Noordhoek in Keetmanshoop has been halted due to a lack of funds.
Construction of the first phase was expected to be completed by the end of September this year, but work has been at a standstill since April this year.
Approached for comment recently, UNAM Public Relations Officer, John Haufiku confirmed that construction has been temporarily halted due to a lack of funding.
“The project however remains a priority for the university and will be completed in the near future,” he said.
The first phase of the campus will house four lecture halls, four geoscience laboratories, one classroom, administration offices, a disability access ramp, concourse and students’ lobbies, lecturers’ offices, a boardroom, ablution facilities and study areas.
Haufiku said only 40 per cent of the construction has been completed.
UNAM’s Southern Campus was established in 2014 and the university’s senate in 2017 approved the transformation of the Department of Geology into the School of Geoscience, which is to start operating from the Southern Campus from 2019.
Haufiku said irrespective of whether construction is completed or not, the School of Geoscience will be moved to the Southern Campus next year. It will be located at the current temporary facilities at the Teachers’ Resource Centre in the Krönlein residential area, which falls under the //Kharas Regional Council’s Directorate of Education.
“Our strategy to move academic programmes to the South are in progress, the classrooms are ready and laboratories are being equipped,” he said.
The construction of the first phase is expected to cost the university over N.dollars 80 million. So far, N.dollars 30 million has been spent.
Construction started in August 2016 and the main contractors are Babyface Civils and China Jiangxi International.
