NKURENKURU, 25 SEP – Minister of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare Zephania Kameeta stated Monday his ministry does not only distribute food to the needy through the Food Bank but also identifies shortcomings in the community and render assistance.
“I am mentioning this because we are seen as only distributing food. This is not true,” the minister said during the official launch of the Food Bank at Nkurenkuru in the Kavango West Region on Monday.
Kameeta said this in response to some members of the public who criticise the programme as promoting laziness and that the ministry should be closed.
The Food Bank is also running in the Khomas, //Kharas, Hardap, Kavango East, Ohangwena and Kunene regions and will start operating in the Zambezi Region next month.
The programme thus far covers 50 per cent of the country and expectations are that the rest of the regions will be covered before the end of next year.
Kameeta further informed the gathering that he saw the need to establish a special fund which will be run by the ministry to help communities with some of their challenges, apart from food.
Private sector is contributing to this fund.
Money from the special fund, he continued, has already been used to drill two boreholes with solar power at the Nehale lya Mpingana Constituency in the Oshikoto Region for people in need of water with the assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry.
His ministry plans to also drill a borehole in the Kunene Region to help young people with gardening projects.
“So if what this ministry is doing is nonsense, then I do not know what the right things to do in Namibia are. For people who do not have water, this is something special,” the Kameeta concluded.
