RTC adopts ‘Operation Clean-Up Rundu’

RUNDU, 04 OCT  – The Rundu Town Council has accepted and adopted a multi-million dollar ‘Operation Clean-Up Rundu’ for implementation in the three financial years 2018/2019, 2019/2020 and 2020/2021.

Rundu Town Mayor, Verna Sinimbo brought a motion to council in 2016, demanding that it comes up with a comprehensive clean-up plan, which is to be implemented over three years as a drive to see the town clean.

Hence, the council approved this recommendation for the three-year cleaning operation, which will cost a total N$30 million, during its monthly council meeting here last week, Sinimbo told Nampa on Wednesday.

Over the last years, the council has often been criticised by the public over the dirty state of the Kavango East Region capital.
According to the council, waste management forms an integral part in the day to day running of any community.

“It is important for any organisation to manage waste properly for the purpose of protecting people who handle the waste, prevent the spread of infection to the local community and avoid open piles of waste, because they are a risk to those who scavenge,” Sinimbo said.

As part of the operational plan, it is expected that the drafting or amendment of regulation will provide for stringent measures to fine waste perpetrators.
The council will spend close to N$10 million on the clean-up plan per annum and as its action plan, a solid waste management feasibility study will be conducted by a consultant to be appointed for N$500 000 during the year 2018/19.

N$2 million will be spent annually on the purchase of one compactor truck and another N$2 million for the purchase of two front-end loaders over two years.
Another N$3 million will be used for the purchase of a bulldozer, whilst N$1 million will be set aside for the procurement of 1 000 wheelie bins, 20 skip containers, a trailer and 1 000 pole bins.
An amount of N$70 000 has been allocated for awareness building of the clean-up plan which includes community meetings, radio talks and school hygiene programmes.
Up to N$500 000 will be used for monthly home clean-up drives, which is a cleaning exercise that will take place every last weekend of the month.

This exercise is expected to target about 19 517 residential erven.
A total of N$800 000 is for general quarterly cleaning campaigns in March, June, September and December.
