NKURENKURU, 27 AUG – Kavango West is determined to be the food basket of Namibia in order to bring prosperity to all Namibians, the region’s governor, Sirkka Ausiku has said.
Ausiku was speaking during the commemoration of Heroes’ Day in Nkurenkuru in the Kavango West Region on Sunday.
She said Kavango West has green and semi-green vegetation in summer and winter and a perennial river, as well as elephants and other mammals.
It is also a region with fertile soil, indigenous trees and fruit and vegetables that offer business and investment opportunities in agriculture and tourism and it is determined to be the food basket of Namibia.
“As we develop this new region, we are inspired by the bravery and determination of our heroes and heroines,” said Ausiku.
The governor, while welcoming the guests, also appealed to all Namibians to embrace the value of sacrifice.
“It is important to note that even after our independence, our region endured suffering when there was no peace in our neighbouring country. I thus appeal to all Namibians to embrace the values of sacrifices in our fight for economic emancipation, as failure to do this will undermine the gains made by our heroes and heroines,” Ausiku stressed.
She also added that Kavango West was one of the battlefields and gateways during the liberation struggle for independence, and was used by freedom fighters such as former president Hifikepunye Pohamba and Vice President Nangolo Mbumba from as early as the 1960s.
Heroes’ Day commemorates the battle of Omugulugwombashe on 26 August 1966, when South African soldiers attacked People’s Liberation Army of Namibia fighters, marking the start of Namibia’s liberation struggle.
