WINDHOEK, 31 JUL – Governments must find ways to create alignment within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to achieve cross-border multi-lateral development projects.
Africa Business Development Director for consultancy Mott MacDonald, Faiez Sallie made these remarks while delivering a presentation on the SADC Regional Gas Masterplan at the third Industrialisation Week currently underway in the capital.
The masterplan is under the spotlight on the second day of the Industrialisation Week taking place under the theme; ‘Promoting Infrastructure and Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Development.’
This was pillared on the discovery that natural gas in southern Africa had the potential to dramatically improve the economic development trajectory and prospects of SADC member states.
The SADC Regional Gas Masterplan is aimed at assisting in shifting market dynamics to attract investment and develop natural gas resources.
Sallie said because power was a key issue for the whole of Africa, it should be an anchor tenant for industrial enablers.
He said gas is a crucial enabler for development in Africa and that subsequently, training and upscaling was important to ensure that that the youth could participate in gas development and job creation.
“For governments to achieve gas development, they must have the right masterplan, strategy and approach and create proper alignment with key stakeholders in the country,” he said.
Sallie noted that governments rushed to develop gas development projects and tried to make the progress of such projects shorter.
“The level of complexity in such projects is immense and is not necessarily really understood,” he said, adding that governments should therefore consider various options first based on what their needs are and what has to be done before these projects can be implemented.
