REHOBOTH, 12 JUN – Two boys aged eight and 11 died in a shack fire in Maltahöhe on Monday.
The Namibian Police Force’s Crime Investigations Coordinator for the Hardap Region, Deputy Commissioner Eric Clay told Nampa the incident was reported around 22h00. He said the eight-year-old Rhyno Rickert and his brother Mathew Rickert, 11, were asleep when the fire broke out.
“The boys were burnt beyond recognition,” Clay said.
He said according to information the police received, the shack belongs to their father Pieter Beukes. He said the boys lived in the shack with two older girls and their father works in Bethanie.
“The girls, aged about 14 and 16, allegedly locked the house and went out. Later it was observed that the house was burning and attempts were made by the community to extinguish the fire, but the boys could not be saved,” Clay said.
The exact cause of the fire is unknown and police investigations are underway.
Meanwhile, Hardap Governor Esme Isaack urged inhabitants of the region to ensure that they extinguish fires and candles and switch off stoves before going to sleep.
“People are losing their lives due to negligence,” she said.
Isaack also asked for assistance for the family of the deceased and said warm clothing and help with the funeral arrangements would be welcomed.
