WINDHOEK, 03 JUN – The City of Windhoek spent approximately N.dollars 4.1 million on constructing more than 18 kilometres of pipelines in the Moses //Garoeb and Samora Machel Constituencies since January this year.
Khomas Region Governor Laura McLeod-Katjirua during her State of the Region Address in the capital on Thursday said this was done in efforts to improve access to drinking water for the inhabitants of the two constituencies.
“The City of Windhoek is also in the process of installing 370 standpipes to provide residents with better access to safe drinking water,” she added.
She further said there has been ongoing investment in the development of new electricity distribution infrastructure in the capital.
“Priority is given to reinforcing the existing networks in built up areas and establishing new networks in unserviced areas.”
The governor further explained that the introduction of additional capacity and network reconfiguration is being done in order to improve dependability; guarantee system security; accommodate changes in electricity demand and ensure quality of power supply.
She said the Khomas Regional Council is committed to providing electricity services to its rural communities.
“However, in the absence of a central regional electricity distributor, the council is faced with challenges of operation and maintenance of the rural electricity distribution networks as it does not have the technical capacity to run these networks,” McLeod-Katjirua said.
She added that the council has entered into consultations with NamPower for the power utility to take over the operation and maintenance of rural electricity networks on behalf of the regional council until a central regional electricity distributor becomes operational.
