REHOBOTH, 03 JUN – Khomas Second Division newcomers Swallows Football Academy moved to within four points of log leaders Namibia University of Technology (NUST) after defeating Kingston United 3-1 on Saturday.
Kingston United won the reverse fixture in the first leg 3-2.
In the Round 18 match played at Windhoek’s Independence Stadium, Swallows drew first blood through Vilho Nghikumwa early in the first half.
Swallows dominated play and deep in the second half, Clifton Dreyer hit the target to extend the score to 2-0.
The half-time score was 2-0 in favour of Swallows.
Coming back on after half-time, Swallows continued where they left off and put the game beyond Kingston’s reach after Godwin Geiseb made the score 3-0.
Deep into the second half, Kingston scored a goal which seemed to be too little, too late.
Swallows coach Jakobus Steyn told Nampa they knew what to expect from their opponents after their defeat in the first leg.
“They play with a lot of pace and running and we decided to play with two anchor men in the midfield to cut off supply from their midfielders to the wingers,” he said, adding that the game plan worked.
Steyn said their aim now is to try and catch up with log leaders NUST.
“We will be playing against Afrika Rassap next and hope for a win to close the gap at the top of the log,” he said.
In other Round 18 matches played on Saturday, struggling Java Java defeated Falcon 2-0, while Young Ones hammered Namib Colts 3-0.
NUST were held to a one-all draw by City Boys, while second placed Afrika Rassap defeated a hapless Impala Chiefs 2-0.
Elsewhere, Eleven Champions defeated Golden Rivers 1-0, while Rock Stones inflicted a 2-0 hammering on Namib Eagles.
