WINDHOEK, 10 MAY – The European Union (EU) has described 2017 as a defining year for the partnership between Europe and Africa.
EU Delegation Ambassador to Namibia, Jana Hybášková said this during the 60th celebration of Europe Day in the capital Wednesday.
Hybášková said the 5th EU-Africa Summit which took place in Ivory Coast in November was one of the year’s highlights, during which it was agreed that the common priorities for the EU-Africa partnership will be in strategic areas such as economic opportunities for the youth; peace and security, among others.
“In relation to the cooperation programme with Namibia and the EU, the focal areas of cooperation are livestock development in the northern communal areas of Namibia, education and training,” the ambassador stated.
In 2017, the EU and Namibian governments through the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry launched the Livestock Support Programme in Opuwo, which is aimed at improving the entire value chain – from livestock to the processing of meat and other projects.
“By improving the quality of animals and products, the programme will help boost opportunities for farmers in northern communal areas to sell their animals and products to local, national and international markets.”
This, according to Hybášková, will in turn lead to increased income for famers and uplift their living standards.
The EU has pledged its commitment to remain supportive of Namibia’s development in line with the country’s National Development Plans, Harambee Prosperity Plan and Vision 2030, she said.
