WINDHOEK, 17. APR – Since the Republic of Namibia Commonwealth Games team made its debut at the Victoria 1994 Commonwealth Games, it has amassed 20 medals: 5 Gold; 4 Silver; and 11 Bronze.
The very first Gold was memorably claimed by Frankie Fredericks in the 1994 200m, a feat he would repeat at the Manchester 2002 Games in the same category, while a Bronze in the 1994 edition meant he left that edition of the Games with two medals.
At the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, Japhet Uutoni claimed a third Gold medal for Namibia in boxing, while at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, an additional Silver medal in boxing and two Bronze medals in athletics added to Namibia’s overall medal tally of 18.
This year’s Gold Coast Australia 2018 Commonwealth Games saw Jonas Jonas win the fourth Gold medal for Namibia in boxing and an unprecedented fifth Gold medal by Helalia Johannes in athletics (marathon) on the last day of the Games.
Johannes is the first female to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games for Namibia.
Out of 27 athletes, there were two Gold medals, and the team is expected to return to Namibia today.
The next Commonwealth Games are to be held in Birmingham, England from 27 July to 7 August 2022.
