KAMPALA, May 26 -- As many as 19 people were killed and several others injured on Friday night when a bus rammed into a tractor and a beer truck in the midwestern Ugandan district of Kiryandongo. The dead include three children and 16 adults, police said in a statement. "Evacuation teams are working tirelessly to rescue the injured and Kiryandongo Hospital is handling. Reinforcement is being organized to support the rescue services," said the statement issued by Emilian Kayima, police spokesperson. The local Daily Monitor newspaper reported that 35 people are feared dead and several others have been taken to the neighboring Kiryandongo Hospital. The bus was heading towards the capital Kampala from the northern Ugandan district of Lira. Police Chief Okoth Ochola tweeted that police ambulances have been dispatched to Kiryandongo Hospital to bring the seriously injured victims to Kampala. He said a team of police officers has been dispatched from Kampala to help their colleagues at the scene of the accident. The East African country registers at least 20,000 accidents with over 2,000 deaths each year, making it one of the countries with the highest road accident fatality rates in the world, according to police figures.Xinhua
