WINDHOEK, Oct. 18 — The Namibia Electronic Sports Association (NESA) has selected two national champions to represent the country in the Southern Africa Region Esports Championship (SAREC 22) in Lilongwe, Malawi.
17-year-old Jannie Potgieter was selected to play the game Street Fighter V, while 16-year-old Nathan van Wyk will compete against other athletes in the game eFootball 2023 after both secured their selection, NESA announced Tuesday.
Both teenagers are newcomers to esports but were selected to represent Namibia in Malawi from December 2 to 5 after dominating their opponents during the U20 national championships that were held from a pool of six high schools in the capital Windhoek.
Namibia was invited to send representatives for the titles of Street Fighter V and eFootball 2023.
“NESA hopes to cultivate these young athletes into formidable esports champions and lead them on the road to success even past the Global Esports Federation Esports demonstrations,” said NESA President Flip de Bruyn.
SAREC 2022 is a joint project of the Global Esports Federation’s Africa Esports Development Federation and the African Union Sports Council Region 5 to demonstrate holistic development strategies for esports in Africa through the values of equality, diversity, fair play, inclusion, and innovation.
