ADDIS ABABA, JAN 14 — The Ethiopian government on Monday disclosed the installation of modern surveillance technology apparatus across the capital Addis Ababa so as to tackle peace and security challenges.
The introduction of modern surveillance system, mainly through the installation of high-tech security cameras across selected places in the capital, is a precaution undertaken by the Ethiopian National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS).
The NISS aspires to contend potential peace and security threats, state affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC) quoted intelligence officials as saying on Monday.
Addis Ababa, which is home to various international and regional organizations including the headquarters of the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, is the economic and political capital of the East African country.
As the city enlarges in the number of its dwellers as well as in terms of its role in the country’s recent economic growth as it is also home to large number of factories and business centers, peace and security challenges have also recently become a major concern to the city administration in particular and the Ethiopian government in general.
The application of modern security measures in the capital at a cost of 43 million Ethiopian birr (about 1.5 million U.S. dollars) is said to be an “ideal way of countering potential peace and security threats” that are increasingly witnessed in the city, according to NISS.
Some 140 high-tech security cameras were so far installed across the main roads in Addis Ababa as part of the first round of works, it was indicated.
Noting the positive experience of security camera-assisted modern surveillance system in various parts of the world, the Ethiopian Federal Police Commission also stressed the “huge role” of deploying security cameras towards creating peaceful environment in the city.
As the installation of high-tech apparatus is a new experience in the East African country, the Ethiopian government has also urged the public to safeguard these equipment from possible danger. – XINHUA
