Walvis Bay mayor impressed with housing progress

WALVIS BAY, 08 NOV  Walvis Bay Mayor Immanuel Wilfred has said he is impressed with the pace at which housing is being addressed in the harbour town.
During the municipality’s ordinary council meeting on Tuesday, Wilfred highlighted some of the town’s achievements, noting that affordable housing and infrastructure projects in general have received great attention over the last few years.
“Topping the list is progress around the planning of Farm 37, which in future may become known as Green Valley,” the mayor said.
Farm 37 is located about five kilometres south of Walvis Bay, near Dune 7.
Wilfred said it will consist of 2 157 erven which will be able to accommodate about 3 000 housing units upon completion. He said it will be a substantial addition to housing stocks, which have grown substantially over he past few years.
“Once we have received all the remaining approvals from the Townships Board, we will announce when the first phase of Green Valley will commence, which will be the construction of bulk services.”
The mayor also commented on the achievements of the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia over the past year. The federation has completed the construction of 95 houses on 100 erven allocated to it by the municipality.
“Council has reserved another three blocks to enable this segment of our community to construct their own houses,” he said.
Wilfred then expressed his satisfaction with the fact that Walvis Bay is one of the towns earmarked for a pilot project for the provision of decent housing to people in lower income groups.
The details of the public-private partnership are being drawn up by the Ministry of Finance and will see about 2 000 erven developed in six extensions in Walvis Bay.
Most of the houses are expected to be constructed in predominantly low to middle income areas such as Kuisebmond and Narraville.
