CARACAS, Sept. 23– Venezuelan acting President Delcy Rodriguez said Tuesday that she had concluded a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Rodriguez said on X that the talks covered strategic areas from strengthening bilateral relations to advancing cooperation in energy, mining and security.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, marking the first meeting between the two leaders since the U.S. seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Venezuela severed diplomatic relations with the United States in January 2019 amid tensions over what Caracas described as U.S. interference in its internal affairs. U.S. diplomatic personnel left the embassy in Caracas in March that year.
On Jan. 3, U.S. military forces launched a large-scale strike against Venezuela and forcibly seized Maduro and his wife before transporting them to New York.
On March 5, the two countries said that they had agreed to restore diplomatic and consular relations. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)
