Tanzanian president pardons 5,001 prisoners to mark 57th anniversary of Union
DAR ES SALAAM, April 26 — Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Monday pardoned a total of 5,001 prisoners as part of the celebrations marking the 57th anniversary of the union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar.
Tanganyika and Zanzibar were united on April 26, 1964, to form the United Republic of Tanzania.
A statement issued by the Directorate of Presidential Communications in the capital Dodoma said President Hassan urged the released prisoners to join fellow countrymen in national building activities and observe the laws of the country.
The head of state also pledged to cherish, protect and sustain the union.
