WINDHOEK, FEB 18 – Viewers on DStv can look forward to seeing one of Africa’s top footballers, Moroccan attacking midfielder Adel Taarabt, in UEFA Champions League action on the evening of Wednesday 23 February 2022.
DStv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.
Taarabt, 32, has been on Benfica’s books since 2015, but his career has mostly been that of a journeyman, having also played for RC Lens, Tottenham Hotspur, Queens Park Rangers, Fulham, AC Milan and Genoa.
In his time at the Portuguese club, the Moroccan – who was overlooked for the recent Africa Cup of Nations – has helped Benfica win the Primeira Liga and Supertaca (Super Cup), and he has set his sights on excelling in the top European competition this season.
Benfica will be involved in one of the most intriguing ties in the round of 16 in the Champions League, as they come up against a potent Ajax Amsterdam which won all six of their group stage games.
The Dutch giants have established themselves as outsiders for the continental crown and have shown in recent history that they can mix it with the best in Europe: they were mere seconds away from appearing in the 2019 Champions League final before Tottenham stole it away from them.
Nonetheless, Benfica will hope they can upset the Eredivisie champions, and Taarabt is exactly the kind of maverick player who could tilt this tie in his club’s favour. “People think they know Adel Taarabt,” explained the Moroccan. “They are about to learn who I am. I’ve always been good on the ball, but the Champions League is about to see another side of me.”
He added, “I knew I had more to give. Benfica and the Champions League are the perfect opportunity to prove that. Before, I was more about scoring goals, assists. I didn’t like tackling so much. But now, when you help your teammates, they appreciate it.”
“The UEFA Champions League is another stage for me to show the people the player I am today,” he said. “I go into every game ready to fight for Benfica. To those who question my desire or ability, I say – watch me!”
Taarabt will look to help Benfica make the most of home advantage when they welcome Ajax to Lisbon for the first leg of their round of 16 clash in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday 23 February, a match you can see LIVE on SuperSport Grandstand, SuperSport Variety 1 and SuperSport Maximo 2.
