KEETMANSHOOP, 1 NOV – Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund Manager for Accident and Injury Prevention, Jones Lutombi said high numbers of road accidents increase administrative costs for insurance, police, courts and the MVA Fund.
This is in addition to costs related to medical treatment, rehabilitation and life enhancement.
Lutombi was speaking at the //Kharas Region road and safety workshop here on Wednesday, held to bring key stakeholders in road safety together to discuss road safety issues within the region.
He said most of the time people only look at the numbers of road accidents, fatalities and injuries but do not know or understand the damage caused by these numbers, adding that stakeholders should start looking beyond the statistics.
“Namibia yearly has close to 3 000 injuries and close to 700 fatalities from road accidents but what is behind those numbers? What is the ugly side of those numbers?”
Lutombi explained that behind the numbers are damage to property and road infrastructure, lost productivity of those killed or injured and cost to corporates of re-employment and re-training of new employees to replace those deceased or injured.
“Behind these numbers are subjective costs such as pain, grief, sorrow, suffering. They also lead to poverty and unquantifiable social and community cost.”
Lutombi said prevention is better than cure and stakeholders must work together to prevent accidents on the country’s roads.
