MAPUTO, Aug. 17– Several people were recently abducted by suspected insurgents in Mozambique’s northern province of Cabo Delgado, local media reported Monday.
According to local media Carta de Mocambique, the incident occurred at around 10:00 p.m. local time on Friday in the Filipe Nyusi neighborhood on the outskirts of Mocimboa da Praia.
Citing local sources, the report said a group of about 10 insurgents passed through the Josina Machel and Filipe Nyusi neighborhoods without firing shots before abducting an unspecified number of people.
The exact number of people abducted remained unknown as of Sunday, while some of the victims were reportedly released after payments were made, according to the report.
Local media reported that insurgents had abducted fishermen near Ntembuzi Island in this district about two weeks earlier. The fishermen remained in captivity as of Sunday, and no ransom had been demanded, it added.
Cabo Delgado has been affected by an insurgency since 2017, which has caused deaths and displacement and disrupted economic and social activities in parts of the province. (Namibia Daily News / Xinhua)
